Honestly, I’ve seen more folks get tripped up by foundation surprises than anything else when they try to build up. It’s wild how many older slabs just aren’t up for the extra load. Bumping out can be a pain with drainage, but at least you know what you’re dealing with most of the time. And yeah, solar tubes—totally agree. Not flashy, but they get the job done without turning your roof into Swiss cheese. I’ll take a weird ceiling transition over a flooded basement any day... easier to patch drywall than rip out moldy insulation.

I get what you’re saying about foundation surprises, but honestly, bumping out gave me more headaches than I expected.

For me, the drainage was a total wild card—ended up with a mini moat after the first rain. Building up seemed scarier at first, but at least I didn’t have to mess with landscaping or reroute gutters. Guess it’s a toss-up depending on your lot and how old your house is.

That’s rough. Drainage is one of those things you don’t really think about until it’s too late. I’ve had similar surprises—thought I was playing it safe, then boom, water everywhere. Building up can be intimidating, but sometimes it’s the cleaner option if your lot’s tricky. Every house throws a curveball, right?

Been there—my backyard turned into a duck pond after my first addition. Ever try to mow a swamp? Not recommended. I get the appeal of building up, but then you’re dealing with stairs and maybe more structural headaches. Anyone else worry about how much extra roof runoff you get with a bump-out? Sometimes it feels like you’re just moving the water problem around...

Roof runoff is such a pain, right? I’ve seen some creative gutter solutions that help, but it’s always a bit of a juggling act. Ever think about a rain garden or French drain? Sometimes those little landscaping tweaks really make a difference. The stairs thing with building up is real, though—especially if you’re thinking long-term accessibility.
