PVC with holes is a classic hack—cheap, easy, and it actually works if you don’t mind a little maintenance. I’ve seen folks use old garden hoses too, just poked with a screwdriver. Gravel under the mulch is a game changer, though. If you ever redo it, try laying some landscape fabric under the gravel to keep it from sinking into the mud over time. Learned that the hard way after a few rainy seasons... shoes didn’t stand a chance.

I get the landscape fabric thing, but honestly, I tried it once and it just turned into a muddy mess under the gravel anyway. Maybe my soil’s just too clay-heavy? I ended up skipping the fabric and using bigger river rocks instead—less sinking, and water moves through pretty well. Not as tidy-looking, but way less hassle for me. Anyone else just ditch the fabric altogether?

I tried the fabric too, and yeah... total mud soup underneath. My “solution” (if you can call it that) was hauling a couple buckets of pea gravel and just crossing my fingers. Honestly, the river rocks sound smarter. At least you don’t have to wrestle with soggy fabric every spring.

River rocks really are the unsung heroes of backyard drainage. I tried the landscape fabric trick last year and, well, let’s just say it turned into a mud lasagna by spring. Pea gravel helped a bit, but it still shifted around every time the dog zoomed through. River rocks stay put and don’t clog up as fast, though you do have to watch for weeds sneaking through. It’s not perfect, but at least I’m not peeling up a soggy tarp every April.

Yeah, river rock is a game changer for drainage. I had the same “mud lasagna” disaster with landscape fabric—never again. If you’re draining your pool and want to avoid flooding, here’s what worked for me: dig a shallow trench from the pool area toward a lower part of the yard, fill it with river rock (skip the fabric), and cover lightly with mulch or more rock. It looks decent and handles a ton of water. Just keep an eye out for weeds... they’re relentless, but at least you won’t be dealing with swampy tarp messes every spring.
