Been living in this older home for about 8 years now, and every winter I swear the heating bills get higher and higher. Last year was brutal, you know, with the drafts coming through windows and doors. I've done some basic DIY stuff—weather stripping around doors, plastic film over windows—but honestly, it feels like I'm just putting band-aids on a bigger problem.
So lately I've been thinking about getting the whole place properly insulated and sealed up. Thing is, I have no clue what kind of money we're talking about here. It's an older house (built in the early 50s), not huge but decent-sized—around 1,800 sq ft—and I'm guessing there's probably next to no insulation left in the walls or attic at this point.
I tried googling around a bit but got overwhelmed pretty quick—some sites say it's affordable and pays for itself fast, others make it sound like I'll need to take out a second mortgage just to keep warm. Plus, seems like prices vary wildly depending on where you live and who you hire.
Has anyone here done a full insulation/weatherization job recently? Like attic insulation, sealing air leaks, maybe even wall insulation? If so, how much did it end up costing you roughly? Was it worth it in terms of energy savings or comfort? Or did you regret spending that much cash?
I'm kinda stuck between wanting to finally fix this issue properly and being worried it'll cost way more than I can handle right now. Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful...
