What’s safe for cleaning fine mesh in ember-resistant vents?

How often do you inspect ember-resistant vents when nearby trees or dry conditions mean more dust, seed fluff, or cobwebs can collect? I’m unsure whether light surface debris can be removed safely without stressing fine mesh or affecting the vent’s listed fire performance.

I’d also like to know what signs, such as corrosion, bent mesh, or buildup lodged in the openings, mean routine cleaning isn’t enough and the vent should be assessed or replaced. Do the vent manufacturer’s instructions generally specify suitable cleaning methods, or is professional service the safer call for delicate mesh?

Light debris that lifts away without pressure is different from material packed into the openings. If it won’t come off gently, or the mesh is corroded or bent, stop rather than scraping or reshaping it. Check the vent manufacturer’s cleaning guidance; if buildup remains or the mesh is damaged, have the vent assessed to determine whether it can be serviced or needs replacement.
