I hear you on the digital stuff just vanishing. I’ve had sketches disappear into random app folders, never to be seen again. Paper’s messy but at least it’s visible clutter, right? I do wish there was a foolproof system - sometimes I’ll tape samples or fabric swatches right into my notebook, but then it gets so bulky I can barely close it. Ever tried using sticky notes for quick ideas? They end up everywhere, but at least you see them...

Honestly, sticky notes drive me a little crazy - they start out organized, but next thing I know, they’re stuck to my phone, the dog, the fridge… and I still can’t find the one I actually need. I get what you mean about paper being “visible clutter,” but sometimes that just stresses me out more than digital stuff ever could.

I’ve started using one of those big whiteboards for my main plans and sketches. It’s not perfect - sometimes it gets wiped by accident and I lose a genius idea - but at least it’s all in one place and easy to see at a glance. For samples and swatches, I just pin them up on a corkboard above my workbench. Yeah, it looks like a craft tornado hit, but at least I’m not digging through old notebooks or scrolling endlessly.

Guess there’s no perfect system... but I’ll take messy-but-visible over “lost in the cloud” any day.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’d rather risk losing something in the cloud than have my workspace look like a supply closet exploded. Whiteboards are fine until someone leans on them and erases half your plan - been there more times than I can count. For me, having everything backed up digitally means I can actually find it when I need it, even if it takes an extra minute to search. Paper just ends up buried under tools or coffee mugs around here.

I tried the “visible chaos” method once - sticky notes everywhere, plans taped to cabinets, even a marker board on the fridge. By week two, my dog had chewed up half the notes and someone used the whiteboard to jot down a grocery list over my measurements. Now I just snap pics of everything and dump them in a folder online. At least digital clutter doesn’t end up under a pile of sawdust... usually.

That sounds like a classic case of “best intentions meet real life.” Honestly, I’ve seen so many clients swear by sticky notes and then spend half their time looking for the ones the cat batted under the stove. Digital clutter can be a pain too, but at least it’s searchable, right? Have you tried using a project management app or do you find the photo folder is enough? Sometimes even just labeling the pics with room names or dates helps keep things straight. It’s all about finding what actually works for your brain, not just what looks organized on Pinterest.
