Digital tools are great for organizing ideas and sharing with contractors, but nothing beats seeing how light hits a color in your actual space.

That’s the truth. I remember one flip where I thought I’d nailed the perfect gray from an online palette—looked awesome on my phone, even better on the sample board. But when we painted a whole wall, it turned this weird blue in the afternoon sun. Ended up repainting, which was a headache (and not cheap). Now I always do what you said—stick samples right on the wall and check them at different times of day. Sticky notes are a lifesaver too when you’ve got five shades of “almost white” floating around...

I hear you on the sticky notes—my walls looked like a paint store exploded during our last reno. I’ve tried using those peel-and-stick sample sheets, but they’re not always accurate either. Has anyone found a cheap way to keep track of all the little decisions, like hardware finishes or grout colors? I end up with random bags and screenshots everywhere...

Title: Keeping track of renovation plans without losing your mind

Sticky notes are the gateway drug to chaos, I swear. I tried going digital with a spreadsheet once, but then I’d forget to update it and end up with a “mystery brass” knob in my junk drawer. Honestly, the only thing that’s worked for me is a cheap recycled-paper notebook—one of those ugly ones you’d never use for anything else. I tape in paint chips, scribble down grout codes, and even staple in the weird little hardware baggies. It’s not pretty, but at least it’s all in one place and doesn’t require me to scroll through 400 photos of my dog to find the right faucet finish.

I know apps are supposed to be the answer, but half the time I just want something I can spill coffee on without crying. Plus, if you ever want to recycle your reno plans (or just laugh at your past choices), it’s all there. Just don’t let your partner see your “final” grout color list... mine still thinks we only had three options.

That’s hilarious and honestly, kind of relatable. I’ve tried every app under the sun—Trello, Notion, you name it—but I always end up with a half-finished checklist and a bunch of random screenshots. Do you ever worry about losing the notebook though? Or do you just accept that risk? I always wonder if I should make copies of my notes, but then I’d probably just misplace those too.

I totally get the appeal of a physical notebook—mine’s got paint smudges and coffee rings all over it at this point. I do worry about losing it, but honestly, I lost my phone in a pile of drywall once, so nothing’s really safe. I tried snapping pics of my pages as a backup, but then I forget to organize them. At least with paper, if I misplace it, it usually turns up under a pile of receipts or in the car. Digital stuff just disappears into the void...
