RE: What should a counter-depth refrigerator installation quote include?
The flooring and cabinet protection piece deserves its own line in the quote, especially since the old refrigerator may need to be pulled across finished surfaces. It should say who supplies floor protection, protects ca...
RE: Lighting up the backyard fence: solar, wired, or something else?
Blue lights are tough to get right, honestly. I saw someone use them as an accent behind some tall grasses, and it kind of worked - gave off a moody, almost underwater vibe. But for general lighting? Warm white just feel...
RE: Regretting my fridge placement - anyone else have workflow issues?
Funny you mention the fridge-drawer tango - reminds me of a reno I did for a couple who had their dishwasher open right into the oven door. Every time they cooked and cleaned up, it was like an obstacle course. They’d jo...
RE: How do you pace your painting projects - slow and steady or all at once?
That line made me laugh - so true. I’ve had rooms where I swear the walls were holding grudges from decades ago. I used to try and power through in a weekend, but after one too many “oops, missed a spot” moments, I’m fir...
RE: WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT MID-PROJECT: WHAT'S YOUR MOVE?
I’ve definitely been there - trying to finish up a backsplash install by phone light, only to realize I’d glued my own sleeve to the wall. Those little LED work lights are a game changer, but I’ll admit, I’ve splurged on...
RE: How often do you actually need to clean your gutters?
I get where you’re coming from - sometimes the simplest approach really does make life easier. But I’ve had a different experience with gutter guards, especially after a renovation a few years back. The house I worked on...
RE: IS IT JUST ME OR ARE THERE TOO MANY ECO LABELS NOW?
CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THE LABELS EITHER I’ve been in the same boat, honestly. I remember this one project - a client wanted everything “as green as possible,” so I spent hours researching every paint label in the store. En...
RE: how much did your bathroom remodel run you (roughly)?
We debated the full rewire, but in the end, just replaced what was outdated or clearly unsafe. In hindsight, I wish we’d gone all-in - patching felt cheaper upfront, but those piecemeal fixes added up and dragged out the...
RE: Getting city approval: digital applications vs. old-school paperwork
Funny you mention the “clarifications” page - I started doing something similar after getting dinged for the same notes over and over. Sometimes it helps, but I swear reviewers still find new things to question. One tric...
RE: IS IT JUST ME OR ARE THERE TOO MANY ECO LABELS NOW?
IS IT JUST ME OR ARE THERE TOO MANY ECO LABELS NOW? I totally get what you mean about the “soul” of a space getting lost in the eco shuffle. I’ve seen clients swap out everything for bamboo and recycled glass, then wond...
RE: Turning a scratched-up floor into something I actually like
I hear you on the dark floors - been there myself, and it’s wild how every bit of lint or paw print just pops. I used to think a super high-gloss finish would be “easier to clean” (ha), but it just magnified everything. ...
RE: Finally got my outdoor space looking cozy and inviting
Mixing wood tones can feel like a leap of faith, but I’ve noticed that once the space gets some use and weathering, things blend more than you’d expect. - that really rings true. Have you found any finishes that actuall...
RE: Keeping hardwood shiny without losing my mind
I totally get what you mean about the “crime scene” effect - tung oil can be brutal for that. I’ve seen clients fall in love with the idea of pure oils, only to regret it after the first dinner party. Osmo’s soft sheen i...
RE: how much should I budget to renovate a beach house?
That’s been my experience too, especially with beach houses. I once specified a “next-gen” composite siding for a client - looked amazing at install, but after two hurricane seasons, it was already showing wear. Hardie b...
RE: Keeping hardwood shiny without losing my mind
I get the appeal of hand-buffing - there’s something satisfying about seeing the shine come up under your own elbow grease. But honestly, I’ve found that sometimes it’s just not worth the effort, especially if you’re dea...
