RE: Keeping cool without the ductwork hassle
I know what you mean about the “robot eye” - mine’s smack in the middle of the dining room, and it’s not exactly subtle. I considered painting the casing, but I was worried about airflow or warranty issues. My place is 1...
RE: Trying to decide between a pergola or a sail shade for the backyard
I hear you on composites - they just never seem to develop that lived-in look. I’ve had good luck with reclaimed oak for outdoor structures. Holds up well, and the character is hard to fake. Bamboo’s interesting, though ...
RE: Keeping up with eco labels is harder than I thought
I get where you’re coming from about embracing imperfections, but I’ve found that a little extra prep can go a long way, even with eco-friendly products. In my old house, dust is just part of the deal - no matter what I ...
RE: Need ideas for draining my pool without flooding the yard
I’ve had similar issues with rain gardens - if the soil’s too clay-heavy, it just turns into a swamp after heavy rain. For pool drainage, I’d stick with PVC and make sure you’ve got a solid slope away from the house. Fre...
RE: Green board in the news - worth the hype for bathrooms?
I’ve seen too many “quick fixes” in old houses come back to haunt the next owner. Green board seemed promising years ago, but I had to tear out a 1920s bathroom where someone used it behind tile - total mess, moisture ev...
RE: how much should I budget to renovate a beach house?
Galvanized hardware with a heavy-duty coating can buy you a little time, but in my experience, nothing really holds up like stainless near salt air. Tried powder-coated stuff once - looked good for a year, then started b...
RE: my house is getting smarter than me, and it's kinda weird
I get where you're coming from, but as someone living in a historic home, intuitive tech isn't always straightforward. When I upgraded, I had to balance preserving original woodwork and plaster walls with modern wiring a...
RE: Sneaky ways to brighten your space without flipping the switch
Sheers have their charm, but in older homes like mine, they're definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution. Our place has these beautiful original windows - great for character, terrible for insulation and privacy. Sheer...
RE: got denied for a permit - what would you do next?
While I agree inspectors aren't usually out to get anyone, sometimes their interpretation of codes can be overly rigid, especially with older homes. When renovating my historic property, I found that standard codes didn'...
RE: Finally found a quiet garage opener that won't wake the neighbors
I've noticed shading helps too, especially if your garage faces south or west. Mine used to trigger randomly late afternoons - drove me nuts until I figured out it was sunlight bouncing off my neighbor's windows. Aluminu...
RE: Backyard Happy Hour: Are Home Bars the New Patio Trend?
We've had a small outdoor bar setup for about three years now, and while it's enjoyable, practicality definitely depends on your climate and yard conditions. Our historic home has a covered porch, so weather isn't as big...
